How do I hang a metal house number?

Hanging a house number correctly is more important than you might think. It not only ensures that visitors, delivery people, and emergency services can easily find your house, but it is also legally required for your house number to be clearly visible and legible from the public road. Furthermore, by affixing your house number correctly, you prevent damage to your facade.

You can place a house number in several ways: by drilling or by choosing a self-adhesive house number. Not sure how to tackle this best? In this blog, you will read about the requirements a house number must meet and how to hang it safely and securely.

Summary

  • You cannot just hang a house number anywhere; it must comply with the requirements of the NEN 1772 standard.
  • You can hang the house number by drilling or sticking it without damaging the wall.
  • Proper preparation and the right materials are important to securely attach the house number.

What do you need to attach a house number?

When hanging a metal house number, it's important to be well-prepared. Gather all the materials and tools you need before you start.

What tools do you need?

Here is an overview of the materials you need to place your house number quickly and safely:

  • Drill: To drill into the wall where you want to attach the house number. Choose a drill that is suitable for the type of wall where you want to mount the house number.
  • 8 mm drill bit (2 mm larger than the screw): Tailored to the threaded studs and plugs you are using.
  • Vacuum cleaner or drill hole brush: To clean the drilled holes of dust.
  • Screwdriver or wrench: To securely fasten the threaded studs into the mounting tubes. Do not tighten these too much, as this can cause deformation or cause the welding nut to loosen.
  • Mounting adhesive: To permanently attach your house number.
  • Silicone sealant: To temporarily attach your house number. With silicone sealant, you can remove the house number later, for example, if you want to paint the wall.
  • Measuring tape: To place the numbers accurately and neatly in the correct position.
  • Level: To ensure that your house number hangs straight.

To make the installation even easier, you also need the following materials:

  • Cardboard: To make a template
  • Pencil or marker: To draw the silhouette and holes on the template.

Where should I hang my house number?

You cannot hang your house number just anywhere. It must comply with the requirements of the NEN 1772 standard. These guidelines are important to ensure that visitors, postal carriers, couriers, and emergency services can easily find your house.

What requirements are there for a house number?

A house number must meet a few important requirements:

  • The house number must be clearly visible next to the door of your home or building.
  • It must always be clearly legible from the public road.
  • There must be no trees or plants obscuring the house number.
  • The color of the house number must have sufficient contrast with the background.

On which side do you hang a house number?

Your house number should be hung as close to your front door as possible so that it is clearly visible from the street. It does not matter whether you place it on the left or right of the door.

In some cases, you can hang an additional house number. This is useful for corner houses, where it is not always clear which number belongs to which street. An extra number is also smart for houses whose front door is not visible from the road. Hang it at the driveway or another spot that is clearly visible.

At what height should a house number be hung?

A small house number should be hung at a height between 175 and 225 cm from the ground. For larger house numbers that are clearly visible from the street, you can deviate from this. How much you may deviate often varies by locality. Therefore, make sure to contact your municipality. They can provide you with specific guidelines.

Hanging a metal house number: step-by-step plan

A metal house number is mounted using the attached mounting tubes on the back. With threaded studs, you securely attach the number to each other and into the wall. By following the steps below, it's quick and easy to hang your house number:

Step 1: Make a template for the house number

A template is a handy tool that helps you place or draw something correctly. For your house number, you can use a piece of cardboard to outline the right spots for the mounting holes. This way, you ensure your house number hangs correctly.

This is how to make the template

  • Lay your house number or nameplate on a piece of cardboard. Then press the mounting tubes onto the cardboard so you can see where the holes will go.
  • Draw the shape of the house number or plate on the cardboard.
  • If you have multiple digits, place them at the desired distance from each other on the same cardboard.

Step 2: Attach the threaded studs to the mounting tubes

Insert the threaded studs by hand into the threads of the mounting tubes of the house number. Tighten them firmly until they are secure. You can also use a screwdriver for this.

Note

Do not tighten the screws too much. Once it’s glued, it won’t come loose anymore because the threaded ends can no longer rotate.

Step 3: Drill holes in the wall

Place the template you made earlier at the desired height against the wall. Mark the spots where the holes should be with a pencil or marker. Then use a drill to make the holes. After drilling, clean the holes of dust with a vacuum cleaner or drill hole brush.

Step 4: Fill the drilled holes with adhesive

Fill the drilled holes with mounting adhesive. If you want to be able to remove the house number later, for example, to paint the wall, then use silicone sealant.

Step 5: Attach the house number

Now slide the threaded studs of the house number into the drilled holes. Gently press the house number against the wall. Let the adhesive dry properly, so the house number stays securely in place.

Step 6: Remove excess adhesive after 72 hours

Let the adhesive harden for at least 48 to 72 hours. Afterwards, you can remove the excess adhesive (that has oozed out of the hole).

How can you attach a house number without drilling?

If you prefer not to make holes in the wall, then the self-adhesive house numbers from MySteel are a convenient solution.

Self-adhesive house numbers

The adhesive numbers come with 3M tape, making them easy to stick in the desired location. Just make sure to properly clean and degrease the surface first. This will keep the number securely in place and prevent it from coming off easily.
